A strong Wi-Fi signal does not automatically mean smooth online gaming. You can be close to your router and still experience lag, delays, stuttering or rubber-banding.
Online games need data to travel through the Internet to the game server and back. Perfect WiFi therefore includes a Gaming Wi-Fi Test, available from the free version of the app.
Ping, jitter and packet loss
The test takes about 10 seconds and measures three important metrics: ping, jitter and packet loss.
- Ping — how quickly data reaches the Internet and returns.
- Jitter — how much latency changes from second to second.
- Packet loss — how much data is lost on the way.
Jitter can be associated with stuttering and rubber-banding, while packet loss can cause problems in real-time games.
Wi-Fi or Internet?
Perfect WiFi has a separate ping measurement to your own router. The Gaming Wi-Fi Test deliberately measures the connection to the Internet, where game servers are located.
So excellent Wi-Fi can coexist with a poor Internet connection.
The 0–100 gaming score
The app gives a simple result:
- 80–100 — Excellent
- 60–79 — Good
- 40–59 — Average
- 0–39 — Poor
Each metric also has its own color indicator, showing what may need attention.
