Why it pays to plan WiFi before, not after
While the walls are still open, adding an outlet for the router at a specific spot or running a network cable to a second floor is a minor cost. Once the interior is finished, the same changes mean cutting into walls or relying solely on WiFi with no cable backup — meaning more dead zones to fix later.
Start from the plan, not from wherever the outlet happens to be
A very common scenario: the router ends up wherever the electrical and internet outlet from the provider happens to be — usually against an outer wall, close to the entrance. That's typically the worst possible spot for coverage, since a good part of the signal leaks outside the building instead of reaching the inside of your home. At the planning stage you can flip this around: first choose a good spot for the router, then plan the wiring to it.
Factor in wall materials at the design stage
Load-bearing walls made of concrete or silicate block attenuate the signal far more than light partition walls. If you already know at the building-design stage which walls will be load-bearing, you can plan the router's position in advance so there are as few of these barriers as possible between it and the rooms that matter most.
Consider structured cabling while you're renovating anyway
If you're already cutting into walls, it's worth considering running a network (Ethernet) cable to the spots where you plan to put a TV, a desk, or an extra access point. A cable in the wall eliminates any uncertainty about WiFi at that specific spot for good.
Plan extra points too, not just the router
In larger homes, one well-placed router is often not enough. It's worth marking at the planning stage where an extra mesh node will likely go, and checking whether it will have a solid link to the router there.
