Fast internet delivered to your router doesn't guarantee equally fast WiFi in every part of your home. Real connection quality depends on distance from the router, walls, interference, WiFi band, device capability, and how access points are placed.
1. The router is in the wrong spot
This is one of the most common causes of weak WiFi. A router hidden in a cabinet, behind a TV, on the floor, or placed against an outer wall has much worse conditions for covering the whole home evenly. WiFi signal spreads out from the router in all directions, so its location matters enormously.
The router is best placed:
- as centrally as possible relative to the area it needs to cover
- reasonably high up
- away from metal objects
- away from large electrical appliances
- in open space
2. Too many walls between the device and the router
Every wall can weaken WiFi signal, though not to the same degree. A light partition wall may have little effect, while a thick concrete, reinforced-concrete, or load-bearing wall can significantly reduce range. The problem becomes especially noticeable when the router sits at one end of the home and the device using WiFi is at the other.
3. You're using the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band too far from the router
Newer bands offer high speeds but have shorter range than 2.4 GHz. In practice, a device near the router may get great results, while in a farther room the speed can drop sharply. So forcing a single band across the whole home isn't always the best solution.
4. The WiFi network is congested
In a multi-family building, your router isn't the only device using WiFi. Neighbouring routers may run on the same or overlapping channels, causing mutual interference. The problem can be especially noticeable in the evening, when most residents are online — it's worth checking not just your own router, but also your network surroundings.
5. Your device has its own limits
A router may support very high speeds, but your phone, tablet, laptop, or TV might not. Results are affected by:
- the WiFi standard
- the number of supported streams
- channel width
- the network card's capability
- antenna quality
- current radio conditions
That's why a speed test result on one device doesn't have to match another.
6. The router is overloaded
An older or weaker router can struggle to handle a large number of devices at once — and a home may have a dozen, several dozen, or even more devices on the network: smartphones, computers, TVs, consoles, cameras, smart home devices, speakers, printers. The number of devices alone isn't necessarily a problem, but under heavy load a weaker router may not cope as well.
7. The issue isn't WiFi, it's the internet connection
It's worth separating two things: the speed of the device-to-router connection, and the speed of the router-to-internet connection. If WiFi between your laptop and router is fine but the internet is slow, the problem could be with your provider, the line, the router, the server you're downloading from, or current network load. So before replacing your router, first figure out exactly where the problem sits.
8. The WiFi extender was placed in the wrong spot
A WiFi extender shouldn't be placed where the signal from the router is already very weak. It first needs to receive a good enough connection to the main access point before it can pass it on. If you put a repeater in a dead zone, it can only 'repeat' a weak connection.
9. The home is too big for a single router
One router may be enough in a small flat, but in a large house, a multi-storey home, or a home with a complicated layout it may not be. A better solution can be:
- a mesh system
- an additional access point
- properly planned access points
- connecting WiFi points with wired Ethernet
What matters most, though, isn't buying another device — it's placing it correctly.
10. You don't actually know where the problem is
This is often the key issue. If WiFi is slow in one spot, that doesn't automatically mean you need a stronger router. The problem could stem from a specific wall, distance, interference, or poor device placement. So instead of guessing, it's worth checking WiFi quality across the whole home first.
How to find weak WiFi spots?
The simplest way is to take measurements in different rooms. Check:
- the spot right next to the router
- the nearest room
- a room separated by one or more walls
- the farthest point in the home
- the floor above, if you live in a multi-storey home
Compare not just internet speed, but also WiFi signal strength and connection stability.
